A 14-year-old boy has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of Avontai Hartleib, an 18-year-old who had spent years in the care system and was beginning to build a new life in Winnipeg. The police say they found Hartleib deceased from her injuries at a home on Young Street near Sargent Avenue around 7:30 a.m. on a Saturday. Hartleib, who identified with the Sachigo Lake First Nation in Ontario, had been living in Winnipeg at the time of her death.
Her father, David Hartleib, described his daughter as someone who always smiled and remained hopeful. He told CBC News that she was just starting to chart her own path in life and had spoken about finding a job and planning for the future.
The father shared that his daughter kept in touch with him, sometimes seeking guidance, noting that she had asked for advice on navigating tough circumstances—something she hadn’t been shielded from growing up. Hartleib spent much of her youth in care, moving through group homes and foster placements before finding some stability in adulthood.
Family and authorities note that Hartleib faced significant pressures from peers and struggled with drug use, yet she retained a joyful side, expressing love for drawing and close bonds with her siblings. The family plans to have her body returned to Sachigo Lake First Nation, a fly-in community about 560 kilometers northeast of Winnipeg.
Police disclosed that a 14-year-old male was arrested on Tuesday and faces charges of criminal negligence causing death in addition to second-degree murder. He remains in custody at this time.
