In November 2024, Simon Kinberg was brought in to write scripts for a brand-new Star Wars trilogy, which is likely to serve as a foundational narrative for Lucasfilm's future endeavors. Many viewers speculate that this trilogy may ultimately feature Rey, suggesting that Obaid-Chinoy's project has been sidelined. For those who were excited by Kennedy's announcements at Celebration 2023, this turn of events has undoubtedly been disappointing, leaving fans puzzled about the sudden shift in focus.
Fortunately, we now have an explanation for the changes at Lucasfilm. During her exit interview, Kennedy revealed that she had been planning her succession for two years, having presented Disney with potential replacements two years prior. This timing aligns perfectly with the studio's strategic pivot that began in January 2024, coinciding with the announcement of "The Mandalorian & Grogu." It seems evident that Kennedy stepped back around this time, allowing Filoni and Brennan to take charge. Given Filoni's responsibilities, it's likely that his own project was deprioritized, as he may not have had the bandwidth to manage both filmmaking and studio operations simultaneously.
Rey has been identified as a key cinematic asset for Lucasfilm, leading to her central role in the upcoming trilogy rather than being featured in a standalone film. Meanwhile, Mangold's project didn't seem to hold the same level of urgency, with Filoni and Brennan steering efforts towards "Starfighter" in preparation for the 50th anniversary celebrations of Star Wars.
