Scrubs Revival: What to Expect from Season 1 (or is it 9 or 10?) - Cast, Couples, and Changes (2026)

Get ready for a trip down memory lane with a twist! The beloved early 2000s comedy 'Scrubs' is back, but not without a few surprises that might just divide fans. And this is the part most people miss: it’s not just a nostalgia fest—it’s a bold reimagining of what the show could be in 2026. Here’s everything you need to know about the revival, from who’s returning to the controversial decisions that have fans buzzing.

SPOILER ALERT: This article spills the beans on the Season 1 (or is it Season 10? Or Season 9?) premiere of Scrubs, which debuted Wednesday night on ABC. If you haven’t watched yet, proceed with caution!

When the Scrubs cast and producers reunited at the 2022 ATX TV Festival, the idea of a revival naturally came up. While most of the cast loved the idea, they figured it was a long shot. Donald Faison (Turk) even suggested a TV movie instead of a full season, joking, ‘Everyone is doing things.’ But creator Bill Lawrence, despite his busy schedule with shows like Shrinking, Rooster, and Bad Monkey, was determined to bring the gang back together. ‘If you enjoyed working with people you love, why wouldn’t you take a shot?’ he said. ‘Even if the worst thing that happens is you get to spend time with people you care about.’

But here’s where it gets controversial: Lawrence decided to treat this revival as a continuation of Season 8, effectively erasing Season 9 from the show’s canon. ‘For me, Scrubs ended in Season 8,’ he said. ‘This is picking it up 20 years later.’ Fans are split—some love the focus on the original cast, while others feel Season 9 deserved more respect. What do you think? Let us know in the comments!

Zach Braff (J.D.) credits the Scrubs rewatch podcast, Fake Doctors, Real Friends, and the T-Mobile ads featuring him and Faison for reigniting interest in the revival. ‘That’s when Bill started figuring out how to make it work,’ he said.

With Lawrence tied up with other projects, Scrubs alum Assem Batra stepped in as showrunner. ‘I feel this show in my soul,’ she said. ‘Balancing heart and humor is what makes Scrubs special.’

The revival opens with a nod to The Pitt, revealing it’s all a J.D. fantasy. He’s now a successful but bored concierge doctor who realizes he misses the chaos of Sacred Heart. When Dr. Cox (John C. McGinley) offers him the job as chief of medicine, J.D. jumps at the chance. ‘It’s about making a difference again,’ Braff explained. ‘Even if it’s harder and the money isn’t as good.’

But not everything is rosy—J.D. and Elliot (Sarah Chalke) have divorced, a decision that’s already sparking debates among fans. ‘Their relationship was always tricky,’ Batra said. ‘We felt there was more to explore with them apart than together.’ Chalke added, ‘It leaves so much room for new storylines and conflict.’

The show also tackles aging, a theme Batra calls ‘organic’ for the veteran doctors now mentoring a new generation of interns. New cast members include Joel Kim Booster as Dr. Eric Park, J.D.’s rival, and Vanessa Bayer as HR director Sibby. ‘It’s like doing two shows at once,’ Batra said. ‘We’re balancing the legacy cast with fresh faces.’

Fan favorites like Hooch (Phill Lewis) and The Todd (Robert Maschio) are back, though The Todd’s return is handled with a modern twist. ‘He’s trying to understand consent,’ Batra said. ‘He’s not a bad guy, just a dated one.’

And yes, Turk and J.D. attempt their iconic ‘eagle’ lift—but their bodies aren’t what they used to be. ‘We didn’t want it to be a greatest hits nostalgia session,’ Braff said. ‘We want to introduce Scrubs to a new audience.’

ABC is branding this as Season 1, but Lawrence insists it’s Season 9. Either way, the cast and producers are eager to keep the revival going. ‘If people like it, we’ll do more,’ Braff said. ‘This is just the beginning.’

So, what do you think? Is the Scrubs revival a home run, or does it miss the mark? Are you Team Season 8 or Team Season 9? Let the debate begin!
