A dramatic debut for Miguel Oliveira in WorldSBK, but a technical glitch left him with a mountain to climb! The BMW rider's first outing didn't go as planned, and he found himself at the back of the grid for his inaugural race.
During the Superpole session at the Australian World Superbike, Oliveira's bike betrayed him at turn two. He managed to recover and return to the pits, but an electronic gremlin struck, preventing a restart. This setback meant he started Race 1 from the back, with no Superpole time.
"It was a challenging situation," Oliveira reflected. "Crashing on the first qualifying lap was a setback, potentially affecting my entire weekend. I pushed a bit too hard, picked up the bike, but then an electronic glitch struck. It was frustrating, but I focused on making the most of it."
Oliveira's resilience shone as he fought his way through the field, finishing eighth. He even gained valuable insights by battling his teammate, Danilo Petrucci, for top-10 positions. "It was a learning experience," he said, "I identified my strengths and learned from Petrucci's riding style."
But here's where it gets controversial: Oliveira must now pull off a near-impossible feat in the next Superpole to improve his grid position for Race 2. He admits it's a tall order, but remains determined. "It's a short race, and anything can happen. I need to capitalize on others' mistakes and be more aggressive to secure a top-nine spot."
