Leftwich's approach to coaching is one of inclusivity and merit-based selection. He believes in playing the best five players, regardless of their background or experience. During his time as the North Texas offensive line coach, he demonstrated this by starting freshmen at center and left tackle, showcasing his willingness to give opportunities to those who deserve them. Being able to get to know recruits, get to know their families, their back story, their history. Being able to create a connection is extremely important to me."
