Former Formula One drivers Felipe Massa and Kevin Magnussen have joined forces with tennis superstar Novak Djokovic and Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to invest in Le Mans FC's remarkable journey from financial ruin to the brink of French top-flight football. This star-studded investment group, backed by Brazilian firm OutField, has transformed a club that clawed its way back to Ligue 2 through sheer determination. The town's connection to motorsport, synonymous with the legendary 24-hour endurance race, is a natural fit for this project. Massa and Magnussen's involvement stems from their relationship with Georgios Frangulis, founder of Oakberry and now an investor at Le Mans. Frangulis, married to world number one tennis player Aryna Sabalenka, also helped broker the deal with Djokovic, who is a self-proclaimed football enthusiast. Courtois joined the project in February, drawn by the idea of what Le Mans is building. The club's president, Thierry Gomez, emphasizes the importance of sporting pedigree among investors, highlighting that they understand the world of sport's unique workings. The takeover represented an opportunity rather than a necessity, as Le Mans was financially stable when OutField approached but needed external investment to break through perceived limitations. OutField's strategy focuses on youth development rather than expensive signings. The club's academy, closed since 2013, will reopen in July as the project's cornerstone. This philosophy reflects both practical necessity and historical strength, as Le Mans has previously nurtured talents like Didier Drogba and Gervinho. Manager Patrick Videira has guided the club to second place in Ligue 2, achieving back-to-back promotions after initially targeting consolidation. OutField's long-term goals are ambitious: to consolidate a place in Ligue 1, become one of the top 10 academies in France, and establish a globally recognizable brand in football.
