Billions of taxpayer dollars are being squandered on Electric Vehicles (EVs) for minimal carbon reduction, according to a critical analysis. Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen's celebration of a 0.4% decline in Australia's transport emissions is met with skepticism, as the data reveals a different story. While EVs accounted for 13% of new car sales in 2025, thanks to subsidies, the reality is more complex. Battery EV sales only reached 8.6% of total vehicle sales, with hybrids, which receive no direct subsidies, selling 2.5 times more units. This highlights the inefficiency of the government's EV subsidy program. The Federal Budget's Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) exemption for battery EVs, costing taxpayers $1.35 billion this year, is a major concern. It disproportionately benefits high-income earners and is projected to cost $9.7 billion over the next five years. The operating costs of EVs are also subsidized, further straining public finances. The government's reliance on these subsidies is not only wasteful but also inequitable, as it diverts funds from other essential services. The Productivity Commission has called for the elimination of EV subsidies, emphasizing the need to phase out tax breaks and exemptions. The FBT exemption, in particular, is seen as the most costly form of carbon abatement, with a price tag of $987 to $20,084 per tonne. This situation raises questions about the effectiveness and fairness of current policies.
